If an ASP.NET page displays 404 status code, check Failed Request Tracing logs to see substatus code. You may see substatus code 17 with this error message: The request is not supported (0x80070032)

SECURITY_DENIED_BY_MIMEMAP
MODULE_SET_RESPONSE_ERROR_STATUS

404.17 Status Code (The request is not supported 0x80070032)

Solution for 404.17 The request is not supported error

This occurs when the ASP.NET handler is not installed or is not working. In this case, Static File handler runs instead and it fails because it’s a dynamic page.

You may try uninstalling and installing ASP.NET components in Server Manager but it’s unlikely to help with the issue.

Check application pool settings. In the server I troubleshot, the application pool was running with “No Managed Code” setting. After changing it to “.NET CLR Version v4.0”, the page started working.

After performing an in-place upgrade (like upgrading from Windows Server 2008 R2 to 2012 R2), IIS Manager may display this error when you try to change settings:

One or more problems have been detected during IIS upgrade. As a precaution, one or more IIS services have been disabled. Please review the following error messages:

Data loss has occurred

You upgraded your operating system or switched from one Windows SKU to another SKU, and data from the previous installation of IIS has been lost or copied incorrectly. As a result, the services W3SVC and MSFTPSVC have been disabled. Before enabling these services, you should review the latest IIS 7.0 compatibility information

Error after in-place upgrade: Data loss has occurred

Solution for “Data loss has occurred” error

Seeing this error means one or more IIS-related services are not running. Check the status of the services below. If they are Disabled, enable and start them.

  • Windows Process Activation Service
  • World Wide Web Publishing Service
Windows Process Activation Service

If you are seeing the decommissioned old server’s name in the IIS Manager, follow the steps below to reestablish IIS connection:

  • Open IIS Manager
  • Right click on “Start Page”
  • Select “Connect to a Server”
  • Choose “localhost” as the server name and complete the wizard

“Data loss has occurred” error should disappear and the correct server name should be displayed on IIS Manager after following these steps. If there is still an issue, check Event Viewer logs and reinstall IIS if needed.

The object identifier does not represent a valid object (0x800710D8)

IIS Manager may display this error when you try to start a website: “The object identifier does not represent a valid object (Exception from HRESULT:0x800710D8)”

I came across this error for a SharePoint 2019 website hosted in Windows Server 2019.

The object identifier does not represent a valid object (0x800710D8)

Solution for the object identifier (0x800710D8) error

Check the applicationHost.config file for any missing or corrupt configuration. If the same website is working on another server, compare the config files.

For the server I worked on, the website was missing folder path and application pool in its settings. On IIS Manager, the path was empty but there was DefaultAppPool for the application pool.

I copied site folders from another location and set up the path in IIS Manager. Then I chose the correct application pool for this website. It started working afterward.

These kinds of issues occur mostly after applying Windows updates or migrating websites. It’s always a good idea to check applicationHost.config file first.

Collect dump files with DebugDiag for a custom exception

$

Let’s say your application throws exceptions with custom error messages when a specific condition occurs. This exception will show up in Event Viewer. However, the information in the event log may not be sufficient to troubleshoot the issue. You may need a full userdump to find out what’s going on in the background.

If you want to collect a dump file automatically for the custom exceptions, follow the steps below.

Custom exceptions

For the simple test application I created, I used the following lines to throw an exception. This Visual Basic application simply threw “Cannot determine the proforma” error when the user clicked Button1.

Public Class _Default
    Inherits Page

    Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles Me.Load

    End Sub

    Protected Sub Button1_Click(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
        Throw New Exception("Cannot determine the proforma")
    End Sub
End Class

When I clicked the button, the event log below showed up in Event Viewer.

Log Name:      Application
Source:        ASP.NET 4.0.30319.0
Event ID:      1309
Task Category: Web Event
Level:         Warning
Keywords:      Classic
Description:
Event code: 3005
Event message: An unhandled exception has occurred.

Process information:
    Process ID: 6476
    Process name: w3wp.exe

Exception information:
    Exception type: Exception
    Exception message: Cannot determine the proforma
   at Test.Default.Button1_Click()
   at System.Web.UI.Control.OnLoad(EventArgs e)
   at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive()
   at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain

Set up DebugDiag to create dumps for custom exceptions

Follow the steps below to create a DebugDiag rule to capture a dump file automatically when the exception occurs again next time:

  1. Open DebugDiag Collection
  2. Click “Add Rule”
  3. Select “Crash”. Click “Next”
  4. Select “All IIS/COM+ related processes” and click “Next”
  5. Click “Exceptions”
  6. Click “Add Exception”. In this window:
    • Select “CLR Exception” on the left side
    • On the right side, add a part of your exception message into “Exception Message Includes” field. Do not use quotation marks (Screenshot for a sample rule is below)
    • Select “Full Userdump” from the “Action Type” list
    • Click OK
  7. Click “Save & Close”
  8. Click “Next” and follow the rest of the instructions to complete the rule creation
Configure DebugDiag to create dumps for custom exceptions

If the DebugDiag throws the error “System.Exception: AutoUpdate failed”, check out the solution in this post: DebugDiag error “System.Exception: AutoUpdate failed”

Case-sensitive URLs cause issues with IIS Static File module

$

If you have third-party software that receives data (such as URLs) from IIS, case sensitivity may cause issues.

For an issue I troubleshoot, the Cohesity storage system received file names from IIS through CIFS. Their storage system (third-party) uses case-sensitive file names. For example: file.jpg and FILE.jpg can exist in the same folder.

However, IIS static module and Windows are case-insensitive. When IIS sends the request to their storage system, It doesn’t transmit the file name as is. Therefore, no matter if the application wants to fetch file.jpg or FILE.jpg, IIS uses the same casing for both. This may result in “File not found” error if the casing of the file name doesn’t match with the casing of the file name on the storage.

You may ask why IIS treats URLs as case-insensitive while RFC 7230 says the parts of the URL except the scheme and host are case-sensitive.

From the RFC 7230:

The scheme and host are case-insensitive and normally provided in lowercase; all other components are compared in a case-sensitive manner.

Case-insensitive URLs in IIS

IIS reserves the case in request URL (Failed Request Tracing shows the case correctly). However, if you are using IIS static file module, the URLs become case-insensitive. This module uses IHttpFileInfo Interface for caching. IHttpFileInfo interface converts filename to uppercase. As a result, the file name could be different than the requested URL.

IIS static file module’s behavior matches with Windows file system behavior which is also case-insensitive (Reference).

The behavior of IIS static file module is not considered as a bug by Microsoft. Therefore, there is unlikely to be a change in regards to case sensitivity for IIS static module.

DefaultAzureCredential failed to retrieve a token (Azure Key Vault)

When you try to retrieve a connection string from Azure Key Vault, you may come across “DefaultAzureCredential failed to retrieve a token from the included credentials” error.

Detailed error message:

DefaultAzureCredential failed to retrieve a token from the included credentials.
EnvironmentCredential authentication unavailable. Environment variables are not fully configured.
ManagedIdentityCredential authentication unavailable, no Managed Identity endpoint found.
Visual Studio Token provider can’t be accessed at .IdentityService\AzureServiceAuth\tokenprovider.json.
Stored credentials not found.
Need to authenticate user in VSCode Azure Account. Azure CLI not installed.
PowerShell is not installed

This message may show up in the error as well: “SharedTokenCacheCredential authentication unavailable. Multiple accounts were found in the cache. Use username and tenant id to disambiguate”

DefaultAzureCredential failed to retrieve a token from the included credentials

Solution for ” DefaultAzureCredential failed to retrieve a token” error

In order to solve this issue in my local machine:

  1. Add Active Directory app registration
  2. Create access policy for this app registration in Key Vault settings
  3. Create environment variables for AZURE_CLIENT_ID, AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET, and AZURE_TENANT_ID (Reference)

For connecting an Azure VM to Key Vault, follow this tutorial. Basically, you will need to enable a managed identity for the VM and assign permissions to the identity.

As this page mentions, the way Azure VM connects to Key Vault is slightly different:

Note: DefaultAzureCredential is intended to simplify getting started with the SDK by handling common scenarios with reasonable default behaviors. Developers who want more control or whose scenario isn’t served by the default settings should use other credential types.

If the application is deployed to an Azure host with Managed Identity enabled, the DefaultAzureCredential will authenticate with that account.

Note: We run into an issue with GlobalLogon authentication (unrelated to Azure VM, KeyVault, or other Microsoft products). We had to solve this third-party issue first before getting Azure VM and Key Vault connection work.

Code reference

I created the sample code below to connect Azure Key Vault and retrieve the value of a secret called “testSecret”.

GetSecretValues.cs

using Azure.Core;
using Azure.Identity;
using Azure.Security.KeyVault.Secrets;
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Configuration;
using System.Linq;
using System.Web;

namespace TestMVCKeyVault.Infrastructure
{
    public class GetSecretValues
    {
        public static string ReturnSecretValues(string secretName)
        {
            try
            {
                secretName = "testSecret";

                var kvUri = Convert.ToString(ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["VaultURI"]);
                SecretClientOptions options = new SecretClientOptions()
                {
                    Retry =
                {
                    Delay= TimeSpan.FromSeconds(2),
                    MaxDelay = TimeSpan.FromSeconds(16),
                    MaxRetries = 5,
                    Mode = RetryMode.Exponential
                 }
                };

                var client = new SecretClient(new Uri(kvUri), new DefaultAzureCredential(), options);
                KeyVaultSecret secret = client.GetSecret(secretName);
                return Convert.ToString(secret.Value);

            }
            catch(Exception ex)
            {
                throw ex;
            }
        }
    }
}

In the web.config, make sure to define your vault URI:

<add key="VaultURI" value="https://yourownvault.vault.azure.net/" />

Modern homes have several devices for entertainment. Smart TV, cable box, satellite box, Blu-ray player, CD player, DVD player, soundbar, home entertainment system… just to name a few. RCA universal remote codes list comes in handy to control all these devices from one universal remote.

To be able to centralize all of your devices in one remote, you can follow the simple steps below.

In a nutshell, you will need to go through specific instructions to hit on and off buttons on the RCA remote while entering four-digit codes to manage different brands. For the remote to access a specific type of devices such as LG TV, Sanyo TV, Toshiba DVD player, Samsung TV, Vizio TV, cable boxes, Blu-ray disc player, or other audio and video equipment, you will need to enter the correct code for that particular brand name.

You can always check the user manual for each device to find universal remote control codes but who keeps the user manuals around? It’s time-consuming to go through pages anyway. Instead, you can use the four or five-digit RCA universal remote codes list at the bottom of this page.

RCA Universal Remote Codes List with Program Instructions & Digit Guide

Without further ado, let’s set up the best universal remote control to get the party started in your living room!

There are two ways of setting up your new universal remote control:

  1. Without digit code list
  2. With digit device codes (direct code entry from RCA universal remote codes list)

Configure RCA Universal Remote Control without Digit Code List

As the first thing, make sure all of your devices are plugged into power outlets and they are turned on. If the remote seems unresponsive, change the batteries if needed.

The instructions may be slightly different for various commercial solutions but the high-level steps are the same.

Please note that some manufacturers use one-touch activity sequences for remote tests but the steps below apply to the majority of the brands.

After making sure all devices and remotes are ready for action, go through the instructions below. The instructions below don’t require RCA universal remote codes list.

  1. Turn on the devices you want to configure on your remote. It could be smart TVs, game consoles, a universal TV, or Logitech harmony ultimate remote
  2. Aim the remote toward the device. Let’s say it’s a TV. Press and hold the TV button. You will see that the power button (ON/OFF button) on the remote lights up. The indicator light should remain on
  3. While the light is on, press and hold the TV button as well as the ON/OFF button. Do it at the same time. It will cause ON/OFF button to turn off. It will then turn on again automatically
  4. Once the ON/OFF button turns back on, release both buttons
  5. Next step: Press the Play button on the remove for five seconds. For a particular TV, you may need to press Slow button instead. The device will turn off. In case the device is still on, continue to press Play (or Slow) button until it powers off
  6. You will need to turn the device back on now. Press the Reverse button on the remove to turn it back on. If it doesn’t, keep pressing until it’s back. In our example, TV turns on right away
  7. It’s time to program the button for that device. In order to store the configuration, press and release Stop button
  8. Repeat steps above for each device (appliance) to keep programming them for your universal remote

It may seem challenging at first but it’s not hard work. You will feel better for using powerful remote control customization features.

In the next method below, we will use RCA universal remote codes list to configure the remote.

Configure RCA Universal Remote Control with Direct Entry of Different Codes

Let’s get into the second way of setting up the RCA remote. Just like the first method, make sure the remote has batteries and devices are powered on (red light or another light color based on the type of universal remote control should be visible which means the component turns on).

Then, follow the simple steps below. This time, you will use a brand code such as tv codes, VCR codes, or DVD codes. Use the RCA universal remote codes list in this page during these steps.

  1. Press and release the device button for the particular RCA tv, tv set, or other appliances
  2. Enter the universal code mentioned in the following list at the end of this page. If it’s a TV, press and release TV button and four or five digit code in the universal remote programming code list. The ON/OFF button (power button) will shine and remain up.
  3. Next step: At the same time, press and hold hold the device button on the remote as well as ON/OFF button. ON/OFF light should go off and come back on up again
  4. One ON/OFF light is back on, release both buttons. The light should stay on
  5. Just like the first method, press and hold Play (or Slow for some remotes) button for five seconds. The device will turn off. Keep pressing if it doesn’t. It will power off eventually
  6. Press the Stop button afterwards. The device will turn on
  7. In order to program the memory and store the data, hit Stop button
  8. Repeat steps in this list to program other devices in your living room and other rooms. Keep entering the next code for each brand

As the instructions state, use the list below for digit codes. If you need an RCA remote code finder, use the search option in your browser (Ctrl + F). Using the browsers’ unique features is the best code search method.

Unstable connection or round has ended. Please try again

Call of Duty fans may run into this infamous error message when they try to enter a match for Multiplayer or Battle Royale: Unstable connection or round has ended. Please try again.

You start up the app, login, choose the game type. Then it shows the pre-loading screen. After a few seconds, it’s supposed to take you to the pre-game area where you can run around and get familiar with the map. However, when things are not working well, this error shows up and you never make it to the pre-game world.

Unstable connection or round has ended. Please try again

As the Attention message implies, there is an issue with the stability of the connection. There are a couple of things to try to get around this error and join the game.

Solution for Unstable connection or round has ended

Follow the suggestions below to fix this connection issue.

Install a VPN app

If you are not feeling like spending time to do some troubleshooting, go ahead and install a VPN app. Once you connect to VPN, fire up Call of Duty and join a match. I used ExpressVPN and it worked well.

However, Activision (Producer of Call of Duty) doesn’t want players to use a VPN app. Therefore, using VPN may cause your account to be banned.

If you don’t want to try using VPN, check out the suggestions below.

Use a different wi-fi

Use your neighbor’s wi-fi or a public one. If you don’t see the same “unstable connection” error, it means there is an issue with your own wi-fi. Are you out of your data plan? Most carriers like AT&T lower the speed once you use up all your data allowance. The slow speed can cause connection errors

Try a different login

If you are logining the app by using Facebook, try email login, Apple login, or Call of Duty’s own login system. Likewise, if you are using email, Apple, or CoD login, try Facebook login. If it works, stick with it next time.

Another option is to login as a guest. It would worth trying it to see if there is an issue with other login types.

Create a new account

For testing purposes, create a new email or Call of Duty account and try to join a match using this new account. If it works, it means there is something wrong with your original account. If your level in the game is low, you may want to stick with this new account. However, if you are high in the ranks, go back to your original account and play with the settings as explained in the next section.

Lower the frame rate and graphic quality

After the login, go to Settings (the gear icon on the top right side). Select “Audio and Graphics” from the menu on the left. Chose “Low” for Graphic Quality and “Low” for Frame Rate. These settings should help with the connection issue.

Restart your phone

Many people don’t restart their phones for weeks. Give it a try and see if you are able to join a match afterward.

Clean up your phone

There might be other apps running in the background and slowing Call of Duty connection. Uninstall the apps you don’t use on your phone. For the ones you use, unload them (In iPhone, slide up from bottom to top. All apps that are recently used will show up in a slider. Slide up for all of them except Call of Duty so they no longer run in the background)

Uninstall Call of Duty and install it back

There might an issue with the game cache. Uninstall the app and install it back. Download the required packages once you login and try to join a match again.

Repair Call of Duty

In the Login screen, there is a toolbox icon on the right side. It offers two options: “Delete the latest update” and “Delete downloaded maps”. Select “Delete the latest update” and hit “Execute Repair”. The next time you open the app, it will redownload the update. This may solve the issue.

Call of Duty server

There used to be a way to change the server Call of Duty Mobile connects but it’s not possible anymore. It automatically connects to a server that offers the best connection based on your location.

If you find a different solution, please comment under this post to help fellow players!

RC73 is a remote control specifically used for AT&T DIRECTV that takes advantage of RC73 Remote Codes. It’s one of the advanced universal remotes which you can use to control your entire entertainment system (including your gaming console, receiver box, sound systems, DVD player, satellite receiver, and other commercial solutions).

With DIRECTV RC73, you can watch and record your favorite shows. However, you will need to first configure it. On this page, we explain how to program RC73 by using remote codes as well as the DIRECTV receiver.

DIRECTV RC73 Features

There are two major features that make this new DIRECTV universal RF a top choice in the industry:

  • Simple control: All buttons including enter buttons and mute buttons are dedicated for DIRECTV receiver. Having only the essential buttons on the remote makes it less complicated. You won’t even need an instruction manual or TV manual (Based on the TV brand)
  • Strong connection: Even if the DIRECTV Box (Receiver) is hidden from sight, RC73 DIRECTV IR can still control the programming

RC73 Remote Types

There are two remote models offered to access DIRECTV services:

  • Genie Remote
  • Universal Remote

On this page, we share the instructions to program each of these two remotes.

DIRECTV RC73 Genie Remote Control

Set up DIRECTV Genie Remote

If your remote model is Genie, go through the following steps which show the easy way to program your remote for an HDTV or audio device.

  1. Turn on your TV. Make sure the remote has batteries
  2. Point your remote at Genie HD DVR, Genie Mini, or Wireless Genie Mini
  3. Press and hold MUTE and SELECT buttons. The green light at the top should blink twice
  4. Your TV screen should be displaying “Applying IR/RF setup”. It means you are in RF mode
  5. Press MENU button on the remote
  6. Go to Settings. Then go to Remote Control > Program Remote
  7. In the list, select the device you want to control using the remote. Follow the instructions on screen to complete the setup

Set up DIRECTV Genie Remote (Manual Method)

The instructions below are slightly different than the ones in the section above. In this method, we use RC73 remote codes.

  1. Make sure your TV is on and the remote has batteries
  2. Point your remote at Genie HD DVR, Genie Mini, or Wireless Genie Mini
  3. Just like the previous set of instructions, press and hold SELECT and MUTE buttons until the green light flashes twice (top of the remote blinks)
  4. Using the digit keys on your remote, enter the correct code 961
  5. Press the CHANNEL UP button. Then press ENTER
  6. TV should display “Your Remote is now setup for RF”. Click OK
  7. Press MENU button
  8. Go to Settings > Remote Control > Program Remote
  9. Select the device you want to control and follow the on-screen prompts. These prompts vary for different devices. Based on the type of device you have you may need to use buttons like VOLUME UP and other volume controls

Set up DIRECTV Genie Remote for Ready TV (Using RC73 Remote Codes)

If you have a Ready TV, here are the instructions to follow for programming your remote in an easy way. For the code search, look at the table at the bottom of this page.

  1. Point your remote at your Genie HD DVR, Genie Mini, or Wireless Genie Mini
  2. Similar to the previous instructions, press and hold MUTE and SELECT buttons. Stop once the top of the remote flashes (you see the green light on the remote blinks twice)
  3. Your TV will display “Applying IR/RF setup” message to indicate that you are in RF mode
  4. Turn on your DIRECTV Ready TV
  5. Repeat steps 2 (press and hold MUTE and SELECT buttons)
  6. Find the 5-digit code listed at the bottom of this page. Enter the correct manufacturer’s code using the input keys on the remote. For Samsung DIRECTV Ready TVs, five-digit code is 54000. For Sony, it’s 54001. For Toshiba, enter 54002. For others, check out the code finder table below
  7. Your Genie remote is now ready to control DIRECTV Ready TV
DIRECTV RC66 Universal Remote Control

Set up DIRECTV Universal Remote for HD DVR or HD receiver

The universal remote (model RC66) for DIRECTV can manage up to four devices including sound systems, game consoles, DVD players, SD receiver, and audio receivers. First, slide the mode switch on your remote to pick the designated device (the one you want to control): DIRECTV, AV1, AV2, and TV.

Go through the following steps below to configure your universal remote.

  1. Press MENU button on your remote
  2. On screen, go to Settings > Remote Control > Program Remote
  3. Chose the device you want to program. If you don’t see the device, use the 5-digit code from the code lookup table below
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup

Set up DIRECTV Universal Remote for Standard DVR or SD receiver

Follow the steps below for RC66 universal remote:

  1. Press MENU button
  2. Go to Parental Favs & Setup > System Setup > Remote or Remote Control > Program Remote
  3. Select the device. If it’s not there, use the five-digit RC73 remote codes from the code lookup tool below
  4. Go through the instructions on the screen

Change Your TV’s Input Source

If you are not able to adjust TV volume, you will need to program your TV using the steps above before changing the TV input source.

  1. Slide the MODE switch to TV (this MODE slider is on the stop of your remote)
  2. Press and hold SELECT and MUTE buttons until the green light flashes twice
  3. Enter 960 using the keypad (input keys) on the remote. The green light should flash twice again
  4. Slide the MODE switch to DIRECTV logo

How Do I Reset My RC73 Remote?

Press the MENU button on the remove. On the TV screen, move the cursor to Settings and press SELECT on the remote. Then go to Remote Control and press SELECT again. Select Pair/Program Remote on-screen pairing. The pairing process will reset the RC73 remote.

How Do I Reset My DIRECTV Receiver?

Find the red button on your DIRECTV receiver. It should be on the side or inside the access card door (for some models, it’s on the front panel of your receiver). Press and hold this red button until the receiver restarts

What Batteries RC73 Remote Uses?

The remove uses AA alkaline batteries (Heavy-duty batteries work too but DIRECTV recommends alkaline batteries since they have a longer battery life).

Does DIRECTV uses RF Setup or IR mode?

The newer versions of the Genie remotes and Universal devices can use both RF and IR. However, older versions can use one of them only.

For updates about Genie devices and Genie DVR, please check out the DIRECTV website designed for the United States. The website states the terms and conditions for DIRECTV’s Protection Plan as well.

For VCR code or TV codes, please check the list below. If the correct model number is not there (Like model rc66rx), please check the manufacturer’s site for your device.

For Roku TVs, Onn TV, and Onn Roku TV, please visit Roku’s website to find the RC73 remote codes.

While trying to install the plugin manually, I ran into The disk-write test failed error:

Error: Command #0 failed. It reported the following error: The disk-write test failed to write 1 MB to a temporary file (/home/panel/.cPquotatest.6195a.1d7.113) because of an error: open(/home/panel/.cPquotatest.6195a.1d7.113): Disk quota exceeded (EUID: 3742).

The root cause for both errors is the same. The solution is below.

Solution for Installation Failed PCLZIP_ERR_MISSING_FILE error

The problem was the file usage limitation in my GoDaddy hosting plan. There is a limit of 250,000 files to have in my entire hosting account. Apparently, the plugin files that were extracted from the plugin zip file caused this limit to be exceeded.

In my GoDaddy cPanel dashboard, I saw this message in the STATISTICS section on the right side of the page:

GoDaddy file usage limit

It’s not fair to have a quote like this for an “unlimited” hosting plan but this is how GoDaddy and many hosting companies operate, unfortunately.

Finding the root cause took some time but the fix was easy. I just needed to delete some abandoned sites of mine and also removed some emails. Then I retried installing the WordPress plugin. It was completed successfully.

After removing files to go below File Usage quota, you may come across Is its parent directory writable error next time you try to install a plugin. Check out this post for the step-by-step solution: WordPress error: “Is its parent directory writable by the server?”

YouTube is the hands-down the most popular video streaming site currently. With over 2 billion monthly users, its audience is almost as large as Facebook’s audience. The popularity of YouTube brings up an important question: How does YouTube covers mp3? In other words: How to download or convert YouTube videos to mp3?

There are several YouTube mp3 converter and mp4 converter sites. However, be cautious about using these online video converter sites because they may download malicious software instead of video files and mp3 audio files you are looking to download.

We will touch more on the safety side of YouTube converter sites and mp3 conversion later in this post. First, let’s talk about the legality of YouTube downloader services.

Is it legal to download or convert YouTube video?

When someone creates original content and uploads it to YouTube, it automatically becomes copyrighted material for the creator. Therefore, to download videos or convert videos, you would either comply with Fair Use terms or get permission from the copyright holder.

Youtube Covers MP3: Free MP3 Converter and Downloader

Being eligible for Fair Use of online videos depends on:

  • Your purpose of using online converters and video formats
  • Nature of the copyrighted work and video quality
  • Substantiality of the copyrighted content
  • Effect on the market for value of the copyrighted content

Before you ask, I should point out that giving credits to the creator doesn’t give you rights for the conversion process or to use a free video converter. For more information about Fair Use and copyright myths, check out this page.

Remember, you can always download mp3 track, audio track, music videos (even long videos) with high audio quality by using this free tool YouTube offers.

Many people look for opportunities for easy downloading of mp3 files so they skip the common-sense checks. Popular web browsers like Internet Explorer and Google Chrome on Android phones, iOS phones, or Windows PC warn about malicious sites but they are not able to catch all unsecured activities. You should be vigilant about what you are downloading on a YouTube video downloader site.

In terms of file formats, the most common format popular sites support is mp3 format and mp4 format. The advanced level best tools also support MP3, 3GP, MP4, WMA, M4A, FLV, WEBM, MO, and a number of other audio formats and video extensions.

Look for these features in a video converter or mp3 converter:

  • No time limit: Some converters don’t allow long videos. Make sure the service you use has no video length limits if you are trying to download long YouTube videos
  • Highest quality: MP3 conversion and video streaming is a heavy process that requires high processing power. For this reason, many sites reduce the video quality. It’s important to check quality of converted file (look for 720p or 1080p options before downloading them)
  • Search button: In addition to Start button, Convert button, and Download button, look for a Search button for an easy way of selecting and converting videos online
  • Device support: Many sites don’t support downloading mp3 or video on mobile devices. Use a service that supports both mobile device as well as Windows, Mac, and Linux
  • Free tool: A YouTube downloader shouldn’t be something you have to pay for. There are numerous high quality tools like the ones we mentioned in this post
  • Site support: Best tools support not only YouTube, but also Facebook, Vimeo, and Dailymotion. There are tools that support over a thousand sites

Safety for downloading and converting YouTube music and videos

When you search for youtube covers mp3 or video converter, scroll down on the page to go to the end of the search results page. You may see a notice similar to this:

“In response to multiple complaints we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 3 results from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaints that caused the removals at LumenDatabase.org”

Google continuously removes malicious websites from the search results. These websites trick you to enter a YouTube video link and click the Convert button. Then a download pop-up appears. You would think the file that is being downloaded is the video or mp3 file you wanted to download. However, it might be a virus that may put your device and information at risk.

Always keep antivirus software on your device to scan converted files. Additionally, as I mentioned above, always do due diligence about a website before downloading anything from it.

We were unable to read your Sitemap – Yoast Sitemap doesn’t show styling

Yoast is the most popular SEO plugin for WordPress sites. One of the built-in features it has is the automatic sitemap generation. It worked for my blog for a long time. However, all of a sudden, it stopped showing the CSS styling. It listed the links in plain text instead. And in Google Search Console, it displayed “We were unable to read your Sitemap” error.

This is what I saw when I tried to access it:

Yoast Sitemap doesn't show styling (Plain text only)

We were unable to read your Sitemap error in Google Search Console

Styling of the sitemap is for making the page readable for humans. I expected Google bots to be able to read it without issues but they couldn’t process the sitemap.

This is the error I ran into in Google Search Console when I submitted my Yoast sitemap URL:

Sitemap can be read, but has errors

We were unable to read your Sitemap. It may contain an entry we are unable to recognize. Please validate your Sitemap before resubmitting.

Examples
Line 1

We were unable to read your Sitemap error in Google Search Console

Root Cause of the Sitemap issue

The problem was the caching. I use Hummingbird to speed up pages by caching them. Apparently, the Yoast sitemap is not compatible with Humminbird’s caching algorithm.

Depending on the caching plugin you use, you may come across this issue if you don’t implement the solution in the next section.

Solution of We were unable to read your Sitemap error

Follow the steps below to solve this issue:

  1. Go to the Settings page of your caching plugin
  2. Find the Exclusions list. For Hummingbird, it’s right on the Caching page itself
  3. Add the following file names to the Exclusions list and click Save
post-sitemap.xml
sitemap_index.xml
page-sitemap.xml
category-sitemap.xml
post_tag-sitemap2.xml
post_tag-sitemap1.xml

Note: The plugin will add a backslash before each period automatically. For example, post-sitemap.xml will look like post-sitemap\.xml after saving the changes. This is okay. No need to make more changes.

After saving the changes, clear the cache and refresh the sitemap page. The styling should work without issues.

Yoast XML Sitemap
Go to Google Search Console and remove the previous sitemaps you added. Then submit the sitemap file again.

It should successfully fetch the links this time:

Sitemap processed successfully

For generic information about Yoast XML sitemaps, check out this page.

If you are working with big XML files, one of my previous posts would be helpful: Working with big XML files

If you want to access your FTP files through a programmatic way instead of using FTP clients, this Node.js example using lftp will come in handy.

In another post, I explained how to connect FTP using C#: How to upload a file via FTP in C#. In this post, I will share the steps to establish FTP connection using lftp and Node.js.

Steps to connect FTP/SFTP using lftp module with Node.js

Here are the high-level steps for busy developers:

  1. Install Python
  2. Install lftp (link)
  3. Install Node.js
  4. Install Node.js development component through Visual Studio Installer
Visual Studio Installer for Node.js Development

After these installations, start Visual Studio to create a project and add JS code:

  1. In Visual Studio, go to “File > New > Project”
  2. Select “Blank Node.js Console Application” project type
  3. Click “Next”, give a name, and click “Create”
Blank Node.js Console Application

Once the project is created, you will need to install ftps package through npm:

  1. Go to the Solution Explorer (on the right side of the Visual Studio window)
  2. Find “npm” (under the project name)
  3. Right click on “npm” and select “Install New npm Packages”
  4. Search for “ftps”
  5. Select the first result. Click “Install Package”. This package uses lftp and supports FTP, FTPS, and SFTP
  6. The window may not react. Wait a few seconds. Then close the window
  7. Refresh the Solution Explorer
  8. Expand “npm” to check if “ftps” is installed
ftps package in npm to use lftp in Node.js

Once the package is installed, you are ready to add the code. Go to app.js file and add the code below.

var FTPS = require('ftps');

var ftps = new FTPS({
    host: 'ftp.youraddress,com',
    username: 'username',
    password: 'password',
    protocol: 'sftp',
    port: 22,
    escape: true,
    retries: 0,
    timeout: 100,
    retryInterval: 5,
    retryMultiplier: 1,
    requiresPassword: true,
    autoConfirm: true,
    //cwd: '',
    //additionalLftpCommands: '',
    //requireSSHKey:  true,
    //sshKeyPath: '/home1/phrasee/id_dsa',
    //sshKeyOptions: ''
});

ftps.addFile('./test.txt').exec(console.log);

Change the following values in this code:

  • FTP server address
  • FTP username
  • FTP password
  • Protocol (Possible values: ‘ftp’, ‘sftp’, ‘ftps’)
  • Port (If it’s your server requires a port other than 22)
  • FTP command (The example adds a file called text.txt to the FTP folder. This file should exist in your Visual Studio project folder)

For more parameter options and FTP commands, check this page out.

What is Bing Ads Seasonality Adjustment in Microsoft Advertising?

$

Seasonality adjustment is a signal for the automated bidding algorithm about when to expect performance changes. It eliminates the need for manual bid adjustments by automatically optimizing the bids but a performance increase is not guaranteed.

It is likely to help with performance during the timeframe specified in the adjustment page but advertisers shouldn’t rely only on this feature for performance improvement.

Additionally, seasonal adjustments are effective under certain conditions only:

  • Only applicable for campaigns with Target ROAS (return on ad spend) and Target CPA (cost per acquisition) bid strategies
  • It should only be used for campaigns with stable performance with automated bidding and have already completed their learning period

Cannot parse the specified XML content (Feed file upload to Bing Ads)

One of the ways to show your products on Bing search results is to upload a feed file manually. You just need an XML file that is formatted based on these specifications. However, you may see “Cannot parse the specified XML content error” as soon as you click “Update feed” button.

In the feed history, “InvalidXml” code will show up for this issue.

Cannot parse the specified XML content (Feed file upload to Bing Ads)

Solution for “Cannot parse the specified XML content” error

If you run into this XML formatting issue, use free XML validators like this one to check if the file complies with the generic XML standard.

If the validation is successful but the file is still giving the same error on Microsoft Advertising UI, check if there are any HTML codes. For the issue I troubleshot, there were lots of HTML tags to make text bold or change the font size.

Use Notepad or a more advanced text editor like Notepad++ to find and replace all HTML tags before uploading the feed file again.

Solarwinds Simplifies Optimization of Database Performance

$

Databases are central to how most organizations collect, organize and retrieve data. Proper data management is imperative to business operations which makes database performance paramount.

Database performance will affect all aspects of a company, so businesses need to identify and resolve database issues promptly. Database managers know the frustration of dealing with a poorly performing database. Improving database performance puts your organization in a better position for success.

The following are tips to help you optimize database performance:

Analyze Your Database Servers

It is essential to ensure the host of your database processes has adequate resources for your database to function optimally. Database servers are the driving force responsible for the performance of your applications which is why you should regularly analyze them.

SolarWinds’ database software is a tool you can use to analyze your database’s performance. Check the CPU performance, particularly ready times, to ensure sufficient resources. You should also check the server’s memory because, without enough memory, your database will fail sooner rather than later.

Solarwinds Simplifies Optimization of Database Performance

Memory usage and page faults per second are especially vital for server memory. The hard disk space is another element of the servers you should check. You need enough storage space on the servers for your database to function efficiently.

Optimize Queries

A critical element of tuning database performance is optimizing queries. Poor queries will often lead to poor performance. A database query is a real-time request to a database for data. Since there may be numerous data queries happening simultaneously, you should optimize queries, particularly the most frequent ones, to boost database performance.

You should start the query optimization process by targeting the queries with the most extended query execution times. You can do so by finding regularly slow queries. Manually optimizing database queries is tiresome and time-consuming so consider a query optimizer.

Evaluate Database Access

Knowing who and what has access to your database is a continuous process that is seminal to improving database performance. Therefore, you should identify any issues with database access. Access issues may be caused by one application or program with access to your database.

The access issues could also be due to multiple applications, which makes it harder to resolve than if it were only one. Finding them may help you pinpoint the source of your database access bottlenecks. On the other hand, if you are facing access issues across your whole database, it is symptomatic of a more significant issue with your servers or hardware.

Review Connection Capacity

Improving database performance also involves checking its connection capacity. Making connections with your database could be taking up a significant part of its response time. If facing such connection issues, reconfiguring the connection pool may be the solution. It is hence essential to know how many connections your database can sustain.

Monitor your database servers’ metrics and slowly increase the connection until the server reaches its limits. You may have to upgrade the servers’ hardware to effectively fulfill your application requirements if extra connections are necessary.

Defragment Data

Defragmenting your data is a step that can substantially improve database performance. Data is continuously being accessed, modified, retrieved, and deleted from the database, leading to data defragmenting. Data fragmentation can lead to a slower retrieval process. It could also cause issues with query execution.

You can resolve the issue of fragmented data by grouping similar data packets and storing them together. Defragmenting data will increase speed and efficiency, meaning better overall database performance.

Businesses need databases to function optimally due to the importance of data. Poor database performance can lead to a lot of lost time and money. Tips for improving database performance include reviewing connection capacity, evaluating database access, defragmenting data, optimizing queries, and analyzing servers.

How APIs Let You Cut Out Low-Level Tasks and Get More Important Work Done

$

0

APIs (Applications Programming Interfaces) are programming interfaces that dictate the communication and sharing of data between applications. They allow applications to communicate and share information.

The past few years have seen businesses – small and large – implementing APIs to automate and streamline their operations. This has been fueled by the changing customer requirements as well as advancements in technology.

However, some businesses are still lagging and do not know how APIs can let them cut out low-level tasks and get more important work done. Here is how APIs can help;

APIs Help Drive Good Customer Experiences

Customer service has led to the emergence of customers who expect seamless and fast buying experiences. It doesn’t even matter whether they are transacting with small or large organizations.

How APIs Let You Cut Out Low-Level Tasks and Get More Important Work Done

However, some organizations are spending a lot of time handling low-level tasks, ending up with limited time for more important tasks. On the other hand, smart organizations have built or bought custom APIs to integrate with their systems to improve their customer experiences.

For instance, you can integrate chatbots into your systems instead of hiring a support team to help with customer service. This way, instead of spending time answering customer questions, you can concentrate on more important work to grow your business.

In addition, you can use APIs to integrate your systems with social media platforms, marketing tools, CRMs, and payment gateways and have all processes automated. These tasks would consume a lot of time if handled manually.

Increasing Collaboration Among Employees

Using disconnected data and systems in your business will end up having a negative impact on how your business uses and manages data. Such systems impact the ability of your employees to work collaboratively and effectively.

However, through the use of APIs, you can use shared data, platforms, and tools such as office365 in your business, which are the requirements for effective collaboration. Every business needs a shared infrastructure, centralized data, and connected systems for seamless operations.

This can only be achieved through the implementation of a good API strategy. This way, your employees will collaborate effectively, no matter where they are working from. Without this, they will spend a lot of time moving from one department to another to share data, documentation, and other resources.

Automating Business Processes

Automating business processes is something that can prove to be a difference, especially for small businesses. This is because they do not have enough resources to hire big teams for all their work.

APIs can help you get more important work done by automating low-level and repetitive tasks. For instance, using APIs, you can have customers schedule sales meetings and appointments and then automatically have them synced with your calendar.

You can also integrate email automation tools with payment gateways to automatically email payment details and receipts to your customers.

When it comes to contract signing, you can use APIs through eSignatures to automate the entire process and eliminate any paperwork that could consume a lot of time. This way, you will only concentrate on other important tasks for the growth of your business.

Extending the Capabilities of Your Business

Due to advancements in technology and the desire to meet changing customer demands, businesses are continuously building new solutions. However, developing an application consumes a lot of time and resources, something that few businesses have.

Fortunately, you do not have to reinvent the wheel when we have APIs that you can implement to extend the capabilities of your business.

Instead of having developers build these solutions from scratch, all you need to do is to look for an API with the functionalities that you are looking for. For example, you can simply add a captcha to your website without building one from scratch.

This reduces the development time and consumes fewer resources. At the end of the day, you will effectively manage your development team and have it working on other important aspects of your business. However, always test all APIs to make sure that they do what they promise to do.

Supporting Sales and Marketing Activities

Sales teams use a lot of data to determine customer expectations and foresee future changes in those expectations. They work together with other professionals, and this task consumes a lot of time.

Instead of relying solely on sales teams, businesses can implement APIs to gather, analyze, and gain insights into customer data. These APIs can even be used to make sustainable business decisions. Using APIs allows your sales teams to get more important work done and focus solely on their job – selling more products and/or services.

APIs play a very important role when it comes to the success of modern businesses. As discussed above, they are also important when cutting out low-level tasks in businesses.

The use of VPNs to Access YouTube TV and Other Streaming Services

$

0

VPNs help to keep you anonymous online and maintain your security. They prevent the government, advertisers, and ISPs from monitoring and tracking your online activities. But privacy, security, and online anonymity are not the only reasons VPN services are in demand. They have many uses; the biggest is allowing users to access more movies and TV shows.

But how does this work?

Take YouTube TV, for example. It is one of the most popular streaming services allowing users to access over a hundred channels like FOX, ESPN, CNN, ABC News, BET Her, Animal Planet, Comedy Central, Food Network, etc. The service is one of the best ways to get your daily dose of entertainment, news, and live sports from around the USA. Try this streaming service for free and choose between Base Plan or Spanish Plan.

The use of VPNs to Access YouTube TV and Other Streaming Services

Although everything sounds wonderful, YouTube TV is only available in the USA because of licensing restrictions. So anybody outside of the USA cannot benefit from this streaming service. But luckily, VPNs can help unblock YouTube TV outside the USA so everyone can access this streaming service. Using a VPN, you can connect to the IP address of the USA and then easily stream YouTube TV from any country.

Steps for Using a VPN with Streaming Services

  • Select your VPN network

The first step is to select a quality VPN to download it, and one of the frontrunners for streaming is Surfshark. To learn how to download VPN, you can read more.

  • Install and sign up

Once the VPN is downloaded and installed, the second step is to sign up for the VPN service and choose a subscription plan that suits your budget and needs.

  • Log into your preferred streaming site

The third step is to sign in to a streaming site of your choice, close the tab and launch VPN. Then, connect to your chosen server and open the streaming service in your browser. Finally, search for your favorite TV and movies.

For example, if you want to watch the current shows on NBC’s streaming service Peacock and you don’t live in the USA, you must change the server location to the USA.

How do VPNs Work with YouTube TV and Other Streaming Services?

The available streaming services geo-block content in various ways. For example, some show different content depending on your location, while others are only available from a specific country. The most popular streaming services are outlined below.

  • YouTube TV – YouTube TV is the most significant streaming service for linear, live television in the USA. It offers the best combination of streaming specs and channels. The site boasts over five million subscribers. With a YouTube TV membership, you will get six accounts that can be shared with family members or roommates. Each member gets their own login, individual DVR Library, and customized content recommendations. Membership offers up to three simultaneous streams. The only drawback is the streaming service is not available to anyone outside the USA. So whether you are traveling outside the US or want to access the site from anywhere else in the world, you will need a VPN.
  • Netflix – One of the most popular streaming sites is Netflix, and this service has over 231 million subscribers worldwide. The service offers original content and a vast library of movies and TV shows. However, in certain territories, Netflix licenses content that other streaming providers license. For instance, The Silence of the Lambs is only available on Netflix Canada, but Netflix users outside Canada have to take memberships of other streaming sites to watch this content. The best solution is to use a VPN to virtually relocate to Canada and watch The Silence of the Lambs and other content.
  • Amazon Prime Video – Prime works differently than other streaming services. Wherever you are in the world, you will get content from the country you signed up in. But if you go abroad, you will find very little content to watch. You can use a VPN to bypass this and virtually head back home to watch all your favorite shows and movies.
  • BBC iPlayer – The streaming service of BBC offers a vast amount of global and British TV. However, it is only available in the UK. So if you are in the USA or anywhere in the world, you cannot watch the content on this streaming service. This can be a significant problem for Britishers traveling abroad. Luckily, you can use a VPN to change your location back to the UK when you are abroad, and the issue is fixed quickly. But you must be aware that you must be a TV license holder to watch content on the BBC iPlayer.
  • Disney+ – Disney+ does not aggressively restrict content like Netflix, but some content, especially Star content, is restricted in some regions. You can access the restricted content by using VPN and changing the location to a country that offers full access to content.

So this is how you can use VPNs to access YouTube TV and other popular streaming services.

FAQs

  1. Can you use VPN to stream content on your mobile devices?

A VPN can be set up on almost all devices, including your computer, laptop, smartphone, and even your Wi-Fi router. In addition, VPN services are available for all operating systems and platforms.

So you can watch your go-to American shows and movies while holidaying in Japan.

  1. Will the VPN slow your Internet speed?

Unfortunately, no VPN service can make your Internet connection faster, and some VPN servers cannot handle your video streaming needs.

However, VPNs like Surfshark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN offer a wide range of servers to choose from, so the impact on your connection speed is negligible.

It is essential to note that sometimes ISPs throttle data and bandwidth when they notice too much Internet traffic. This may result in buffering issues when streaming content, but VPN solves this problem.

  1. Is it legal to use a VPN?

VPN is legal in most countries, including Japan, Germany, the UK, the USA, etc. But some countries restrict the use of VPNs like Russia. So you must be aware of the country’s laws before using a VPN.

On Turo’s website, there is a list of eligible cars but this list is outdated. For example, It lists BMW X1 2014 and newer models as eligible. When I tried to onboard my BMW X1 2014, they said it’s not compatible.

After some email exchanges with Turo Support, they provided the screenshots below. This is the updated list of Turo Go eligible vehicles. Screenshots are blurry but they are readable.

Note: I talked with Getaround Support as well. They support pretty much all cars! If your car is not eligible for Turo Go, give it a try with Getaround.

OneDrive doesn’t sync or sign in on Ethernet connection

OneDrive may not sync or may not sign in if you are using the ethernet cable to connect to the internet. If you are using Wi-Fi, everything works well.

This issue doesn’t happen with all kinds of wired internet connections. It happens only if the connection is metered. For many apartment buildings where you don’t use your own router, the building management may be metering your connection without you even realizing it.

So it seems like an odd issue at first but the underlying reason makes sense because OneDrive is designed to pause syncing if the network is metered. This is for using the bandwidth wisely and preventing extra bandwidth charges to your account.

Solution for OneDrive sync and sign-in issues in wired connection

You don’t need to unlink or uninstall OneDrive to solve this issue. Simply disable the metered network check through these steps:

  1. On the system tray, right-click on the OneDrive icon. Click Settings
  2. On the left side menu, click Sync and backup
  3. Disable the option that says Pause syncing when this device is on a metered network
  4. Right-click on the OneDrive icon in the system tray. Click Quit OneDrive to close the program
  5. In Start Search field, type OneDrive. Click OneDrive icon to reopen the program

After you quit and reopen OneDrive, the sync should start automatically. It may ask for login credentials one more time.
